Shadow Mountain Trail Running
Finding a trail running experience in Phoenix is a breeze because we have numerous mountain preserves sprinkled throughout the city. Please note my reviews are based on running rather than hiking. Today I will review the Shadow Mountain trail located at 2601 E Acoma Dr. This trail is near and dear to me because I live nearby and even proposed to my wife at the summit!
Be advised that the main trail is poorly marked however easy to follow. It is approximately a 2.6 mile loop with a few elevation gains interspersed with long flat stretches great for running.
Starting clockwise you will quickly go up an incline giving great views of North Phoenix and the Preserve at Shadow Mountain community immediately below. There will be an opportunity shortly thereafter where you can go off track and hike to the summit of Shadow Mountain. This is quick and easy and a must do for a first timer in the park.
Continuing south on the main trail you will pass above the Chateau Thierry neighborhood and then turn west further into the park and a rocky valley. There is another southbound facing accent here which offers the best views of the trail at its peak. It is here you can continue the main trail heading south towards Sweetwater Ave or should you choose a shorter option, turn right and head down a trail looking directly at the Dream City Church.
As you loop back heading north you will be traveling parallel to Cave Creek Rd. There are lots of flat sections here to really pick up your speed as you head into the home stretch. After crossing a small paved road you will encounter your final climb. From here there are multiple east running trails of varying altitudes on the side of the mountain which will all lead to the beginning.
Overall Shadow Mountain is perfect all day in the winter and during sunrise and sunset in the summer. The trail is typically uncrowded and dog friendly. Coyotes are common and unafraid of humans in the area so just keep running. Maybe I’ll see you out there one day! Run safe.
